If you are 17 you can….
- Drive a car with a provisional driving licence and a 21+ adult in the passenger seat who is qualified to drive, until you pass your test
- Drive a motorcycle (once you have passed a CBT test)
- Be sent to prison
- Apply for a helicopter pilot’s licence
If you are 18 you are an adult in the eyes of the law and you can….
- Get a tattoo
- Vote in a general or local election (but you must register first)
- Buy and drink alcohol
- Serve on a jury
- Join the armed forces without your parents’ consent
- Buy cigarettes

Consumer Rights
Helpful hints:
- When you buy something it is always worth asking if you can change the item or get a refund if you find that it is not suitable
- Check labels before you buy goods
- It is your right as a consumer for the seller to provide you with good quality products that are not broken/damaged and that match the description given to you by the seller
- Always keep your receipts
- If you find an item to be unsatisfactory or faulty, act quickly
- Don’t be afraid to ask for your money back. If you feel that you are being unfairly treated ask to see the manager
- If you feel that you have been unfairly treated and you wish to take your case further contact your local Trading Standards office.
